I found a tutorial on setting up ICS on WinME. That didn't work out.

Then I read on W2k help about enabling ICS. And it says "You should not use this feature in a network with other Windows 2000 Server domain controllers, DNS servers, gateways, DHCP servers, or systems configured for static IP."

So I have a static IP and I'm also connected to a DNS server.

Does that mean I should set up a DHCP server instead?

Thanks,
WW

Sometimes, it's better to use Proxy+ or Wingate:) than the built in ICS. One of the installation that I support uses static IP DSL. They share internet using Proxy+ rather than ICS.

These aren't free, are they?

I have SyGate for two users, but I need more than that and I'm cheap.

After all you know how my wallet looks like :)

for ICS you'll need two network cards for the WinME/Win2K system, and you'll need to use that comp as a server for the other 2 comps.

u are setting this up on your LAN: it doesn't matter whether u have a static IP to the internet or not, nor does it matter whether u have access to an external DNS server...what that statement refers to is computer systems on the LAN (disregard previous statement if i misunderstood and that u have specified IP's on your comps and have configured a DNS server on your LAN)

that warning is to prevent confusion between comps that host DHCP

i tried ICS and some proxy programs for a week before buying an internet router; it's more efficient and permits faster internet connections for all comps and there is no software to mess with

but if u want to set up ICS (which OS do u intend to use WinME or Win2K?):
  1. one NIC will connect to your internet the other NIC will connect to the hub/switch/router of your LAN which connect to your other comps
  2. install ICS on the comp with 2 NICs, specify which NIC is connected to what
  3. set up TCP/IP to autodetect IP address via DHCP
  4. and u should be set
