For a work project, I need to come up with a way to explain why 'details' are important in information.

So far the only thing I can think of is that 'details' are what make information valuable.

'It's going to rain' versus 'It's going to rain in San Jose at 8pm on Friday Night'

Obviously "it's going to rain" is fairly meaningless without the details.

Thoughts?

Is there actually an argument that details aren't important?? I wouldn't want to work for or with anyone who thought details weren't necessary.

"I need this" could mean "I need this ASAP" or "I need this by next week"--a world of difference in meaning.

Oh.. no it's for marketing.. One of their services is being branded around 'details'.

For me, the details are almost never given to me. I get reports of "customer is down." Well, what really should have been communicated to me is "customer is having an issue on one phone when attempting to dial one number." Pretty important distinction.

Some text books define information as data in context.

You might consider the perspective that the 'details' provide a context that enhances the meaning of your information.

Best of luck,

Give real life examples of when details matter compared to when they don't.

I could see this being done with a humors take.

Titanic (for off the top of my head example) missed some important details and we all know the result.

Man on the Moon or even the very recent and historic successful SpaceX.

First "fail" shows little concern for minor details.

First "success" shows a blur or montage of schematics, people working, code, tools, etc, then success.
