Need to rip DVD segments... can't make it work

I'm trying to pull stuff off DVD so I can put it on a PC. Never did this before and I'm pretty frustrated.

Tools available: I have Handbrake, VLC, DVDFab trial version (I thought I needed something called HD Encrypter that is part of it) and Adobe Premiere Elements 7. I am OK buying something if it's < $30 and actually gets the job done easily.

Problem: I have no idea how to do it this. Handbrake says encrypted DVD support unavailable and I get no output. Another try I ended up with AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS directories and files within those but didn't know what to do after that. My one successful attempt ended up with a DVDFab watermark on top of it and that won't work for me.

After spending most of the afternoon searching for info and getting nowhere, I'm out of ideas. Can anyone point me to a site or give me directions on how to do this?

I'm not sure exactly what you are doing (or not) that isn't working, but this is how I rip my DVDs to PC.

1) Rip and decrypt the disc to the hard drive using the free version of DVD Fab 8 using the default settings plus checking the box to "Remove Annoying PCGs".

2) Tell Handbrake to use the ripped folder as the Source location.

3) Select the track(s) I want to convert (it selects the main movie automatically but you can choose others if you want to.

4) Rename the output file if desired and make sure it's saving as an MP4 (my preferred format).

5) Adjust any settings I prefer if they aren't already set properly then click the Start (or Add to Queue) button.

6) Watch the movie/clips.

I do that and I get a file with a big DVDFab watermark on it. I start DVDFab, go to DVDRipper, select the track, select Generic, and hit start. I end up with an .avi with a big watermark on it. I see you mentioned the free version and that's what I thought I d/l'ed today, version 8.1.9.0. It is a 30 day trial but the HD Decrypter module is free and doesn't expire. But it puts a huge DVDFab watermark in the output file.

Any ideas? Should I be looking for a different version of DVDFab?

DVDRipper is part of the paid package. Use the DVDCopy function to out put to a folder on your hard drive. It'll be in VOB format. Convert/edit from that point.

Ah, the DVDCopy function worked. Thanks to both of you.

Any suggestions for what to use when my 30 day trial expires? The DVDCopy function costs $ after the trial. The only piece that stays free is HD Decrypter but I don't see how that is enough to get this done.

A friend with a Mac says he does this and only needs Handbrake to do it, but I don't see how to do it with Windows without using something else.

Take a look at makemkv. If all you want to do is rip to digital that is a good free app to do the initial rip then from there you can use handbrake to encode it in mp4 if you wish. It will rip both DVD and Blu-Ray. I use this on my htpc instead of dvdfab. stupid easy to use.

I use a program called AnyDvd...Once it's installed you can rip and burn with any available copying software you want without problems. I will say that I assume your problems are copy protection related and this forum does not support bypassing copy protection.

At my work, we use MPEG Streamclip. It's free, and it seems to do a good job at ripping certain segments.
