need to restart computer in another bedroom; somebodys sleeping in it

We have a guest in the house and they are sleeping in my office. I left my computer on while Outlook was running. I need to get to my e-mail, but can't access the PST file since it's in use. Is there any way to remotely restart it so I can access my e-mail without disturbing my guest? We're on a wired LAN both machines are running WinXP Pro.

Ok, wrong OS, but, hey I'm not the one that picked XP.

Actually you're very close...PM me your e-mail & I'll take care of you.

Edit, nm, it was in your profile 😱

oh, sorry, I meant I was going to send it to MrHappyMonkey. It's just a little app to restart a computer remotely. Would you like a copy as well?

Just go into the room stark naked and hope they don't wake up..... ohhh wait, you can ignore the stark naked part. 🙂

would there be any way to trace who shut the computer down if you dont leave a message? like for example if i am at work and wanna shutdown a buddies computer for fun could he find out how it happened pretty easily? like by checking network logs or something? Thanks

Alright, had enough e-mail requests, so I just put it up on my website.

Here's the link

To see all the options just run it with a /? switch.

hmm, doesn't seem to work for my desktop/laptop. Program can see other computer, but gives an error about not being able to shutdown remote computer. Both computers are running Windows XP Professional. Any ideas what could be the reason?

Thanks,
--Andrey

The remote computer must be running windows 2000/XP and you must be an administrator on the remote computer for it to work.

Try the /C switch (I think that's what it is) to force all programs to close. Might have some app that doesnt' want to die.

Heh, that program could wreak havoc on a university dorm lan... 🙂

Actually it's not even limited to a LAN, I've shutdown my parents computer before with it (which I admin from school). Like I said earlier though, you must be an administrator on the remote PC to shut it down.

Active Directory Users and Computers, select the computer, go to the ? tab, click shutdown.

I'm not on the network I own right now, so I can't tell you exactly where it is.
