Need to reset permissions in Windows 10

As of this recent Win10 update (Oct.-Nov 2017) my permissions changed and it's causing programs to not save files etc. So I did a little searching on how to reset permissions in Windows 10 and have come up with a couple of links I looked into but it looks like they regard Windows 7. The link I'm most confident in is this one: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...t/9da312d2-c99b-4283-a275-e74d93dcc366?auth=1

but it looks like it's for Windows 7? Does anyone have any recent links on how to reset permissions in Windows 10?

Thanks

Well, Amrita's script won't help you, that's for sure. I'm not sure who it would help as she seems to have dusted off a script written for the XP era and not written particularly well. For example, this script doesn't help anyone running with user privileges (which is everyone except Administrator on default UAC settings on Vista and later).

If you're only having a problem saving files then at least your solution is somewhat simpler than having to do a system-wide permissions reset.

Quick question: Windows isn't warning you about logging on with a temporary profile, or any issues with the user profile service is it? If so, don't follow these instructions.

I have Win7 here, so you may need to alter these instructions slightly because I don't think I've had to alter permissions on a Win10 system:
What I would do in your situation is fire up File Explorer, go into C:\Users, right-click on your username, Properties, Security, Advanced, Change Permissions.

If your username is in the list of entitled users, it should say that your user has full control and applying to this folder, subfolders and files. If so, I'd tick the box that replaces all child object permissions and then apply the change. If your user isn't listed it would surprise me, if so add it and give it full permissions. If it's there then double-click on it and give it full permissions. Then tick the child object permissions box and click on OK.

Resetting permissions can sometimes be a case of whack-a-mole so let us know what happens if it doesn't seem to go according to plan.

Hi there, thanks for the reply!

Here is what I did; I went into explorer C:\Users, right clicked my profile, Properties, Security, Advanced, Change Permissions. My name was in the list. It said I had Full Control with the included sub-folders and files. I did tick the check box and applied the changes. I think it worked the way it's suppose to work.

Everything seems fine except for one program that requires a live download to make the program work. The downloads don't get saved.

Gonna manually download them and place them into the folder and see if that makes it work. The program is still in Alpha stage but others don't have the same problem I am having.. hmmm

Could some of this have to do with Win10 1709's new feature to protect against Ransomware, called "protected folders"? I think that you now may have to whitelist your programs, to be able to save into your profile dir or sub-dir.

I think that may be it. I briefly read the notes when I did the update to both my machines. Is there any solution for this?

So if VirtualLarry is correct what happens when you go to Start>settings>update and security>windows defender>open windows defender security center>click on the shield icon>virus and threat protection>controlled folder access
Is that enabled or disabled?

So in an ironic twist of fate it appears that I now also ran into this issue. After trying to help BTRY B 529th FA BN diagnose the issue it appears I inadvertently enabled controlled folder access. Even after disabling controlled folder access through the method I described above Windows Defender still deleted certain .exe's it deemed a threat.
Only after adding certain folders and extensions to the exclusions list was I able to proceed with the install of the program I downloaded.

I must admit that this was unexpected as I have never had this issue before this thread. I do not like it.

I was able to add folders and file extensions to the exclusions list and then proceed with the installs but before this thread I never had this issue. I edited my post above to reflect this more appropriately. It occurred to me after reading it again that I posted in haste and it was confusing.

Is that how it works? It deletes them after the fact? My understanding, was that it would prevent certain programs, from being allowed to write to the user profile folder or sub-folders at all, unless the program was white-listed.

I believe that your issue is something else, and you may well be infected with something.

My apologies VirtualLarry but I posted above very quickly and it came across as somewhat confusing. I have edited it in an attempt to be more concise.
I do not believe my OS has become infected.

Edit: VirtualLarry, if you would like I can shoot a short video showing you the deletion of the file. I can promise that it won't be very exiting but it could be helpful in understanding how controlled folder access works. Let me know and I will upload it to youtube.
