Need to replace thermal paste?

I am putting my cpu into a different motherboard. Is it safe to leave the old thermal paste on? I have Artic Silver 5 coming soon, but I was just wondering if I could move it into the new one with the same thermal paste from the stock cooling left on it.

Thanks for your help.

If you can move the entire CPU and cooling assembly as a unit without causing any movement or separation, it could be done. The stuff does dry out, but as long as it is not moved at all, it is still valid. However, it is usually better to clean off all the old and start fresh.

No, use peanut butter.

What are you talking about MulletLover?

I don't know if that would be possible since I would have to unlatch the CPU which is under the heatsink. I did, one time before, remove the heatsink and then put it back on because I thought my computer was overheating or such and nothing bad happened at all. Although, it was for about 15-30 seconds.

well, as corkyg sayed... If you can't keep it as a single unit then you'll have to reapply thermal compound of some sort.
Though (and this is on your own responssibility), if you live in an area where the wether isn't too hot, and you don't OC, and given you're not using one of the old AXP's then you might be fine without the thermal compound for a little while.
Though I'd check on temps often, and wouldn't do any gaming or other long time 100% cpu tasks.

WTF? Thats about as useful as a Mullet😕

i had my p4 2.5ghz running for two whole weeks on tooth paste. temps were 65°-70° and i was scared as hell first but even when the thermal paste i ordered came in, i kept it running for some days and then finished the experiment. It works, the McGyver way,but id only recommend it for worst case scenarios like when u already ripped of ur cooler and later find urself being out of thermal grease :/
I should add that i used plain tooth paste, no vaseline addon, and temps sucked alot, dunno if vaseline helps that much to get the temps down like the link above says.

Thermal paste is overrated, you'll be fine. I ran a cpu with old crusty paste and bits of old heatpad thing for a few months before i got some proper stuff. Temps were fine. i.e below 30*
