My budget is $400. My current set up is:

Asus P5N-E SLI Motherboard
4GB of DDR2 (2x2GB)
EVGA GeForce 8800GT

I'm looking at the GT285. Let me know your ideas.

I'm in a similar situation. Running a 8500 GT on an 1156 platform.. What are your graphic needs? I'm considering the MSI GTX 275 . It's known to be quiet and very cool.

GTX 285 is probably the worst card to get right now, when 5850 will be just as fast but much cheaper then it and it's almost here.
Not only this, but 5870, which is way faster then gtx 285, it's only 50$ more. Anyway you take it, 285 doesn't worth it, at least until Nvidia cuts its price.

I'm only seeing 5870 at that price tag as being the card to get. Cheaper then that and we go into gtx 260/275 4870/4890 territory. These seem to be the only choices today.

My advice - get another 8800GT for cheap SLI and then wait until nVidia's GT300 comes out later this year or early next year!

Unless you play Crysis there should be no immediate need to upgrade to a GTX 285.

In fact it doesn't make sense to purchase a DX10 card at this point, the ATI Radeon 5850 should be your immediate upgrade path if you just can't wait.

I think you mean DX11, since the 8800GT already supports DX10.

gtx 275 is a much better buy than gtx 285 right now if you're looking to go cheap, should be ~ $160. A really cheap alternative, as mentioned, would be to go for a 2nd 8800gt. That would be faster in most instances than gtx 275. If you're looking for better card get 5850 in a week or so, it will cost around $270. It is actually 10-20% faster than gtx 285 and costs less. Best card out now is 5870, it's $380, in and out of stock at newegg right now.

In my opinion, 8800 GT SLI is a no go, because of the 512 mb of vram, which just isn't enough anymore.

512MB is not enough for 1920x1200 or higher resolutions but is just fine for 1680x1050 or lower.

Depends how much AA you are using, I, for example, use as much as I can. It depends if one wants to play GTA 4 maxed out. It depends on a lot of things, but one thing is certain: 512 mb is not high end anymore.

I'd get a 5850 when they become available in the coming days (hopefully). Generally better performance than the GTX 285 for less money... what's not to love? Plus DX 11 support. The 5870 also falls into your budget and gives even greater performance - even if the price to performance ratio is not as great.

From what I've heard from you guys and the research I did, I think I'll go with the 5870. It offers a huge upgrade in performance over the 8800GT.

Why not just get abother 8800gt?Sli'd 8800gt's perform faster then a gtx 285. Sli works way better then it used to.
You can get a used one for about 70$

70$ will give you a 85% performence boost.
Or 390$ for 120% performance boost.
Is 85% boost in performance enough?

What kind of cpu you have?

The 8800GT suggestion is great from a price/performance standpoint.

But two 600MHz 8800GT (16ROPs/112SPs) 512MB in SLI mode is not faster than a 650MHz GTX285 (32ROPs/240SPs) in general.
Sure SLI is improved in relation with the past, but this doesn't solve all its problems.

Now regarding perf. (1920X1200 4X AA 16X AF) a GTX285 can be
-10% in some games that the SLI works perfectly (near 2X 8800GT perf.) but sadly, in many games this is not happening.

The games that you find in tech sites test are usually high profile games (which is logical), Naturally NV tries more for the high profile games to maximize the SLI perf.
Depending on the game engine sometimes it succeed, sometimes not.

But for the price, you gave a very good suggestion.
