need to replace cd rom drive

i've got an old compaq presario laptop that needs the cd rom drive swapped. do i need to get one from compaq? or will any old cd rom/rw drive work?

the laptop was made around 97/98 and i'm using it as a training laptop for my 2 y/o daughter. (she likes playhouse disney and she's just learning to point and click 🙂 )
