I was thinking something Socket 754 but I've been out of the loop for so long I'm totally lost. Hopefully something under $200 total but might be able to stretch to $250. Keeping the other parts of the system including 2x512MB sticks of PC3200 and a Radeon 9800 Pro so need something that would complement them well. Any recommendations would be great. Thanks :D

Also OCing is out of the question for the old proc as it is barely stable at stock speeds and thus is why it's being replaced. I'd also rather not OC the new as it is for my brother's brithday present and I don't have the time to deal with it if something goes wrong.

Wow .. I have almost the EXACT same combo (except I run a Geforce 6800, and my 2500 is a mobile) .....

I used to OC mine a lot, but for the last 6 months or so, it's been running warmer then before (while ambient has been same temp), and it's become unstable with even the slightest Overclocks.

I'm tempted to pick up a 754 A64 3000+ or 3200+ (not sure about mobo though) ....
I should wait a while though, as I am trying to build up my savings rather then deplete them, and I spent too much money on stuff I didn't "need" already this year (it adds up to several thousand ... which would be a nice "pay down the morgage so I don't have to pay PMI any more" payment ... but ohh well ...)

I'd say you should be able to go A64 + mobo for around $200 .... use your current ram and vidcard ... and hopefully your Power Supply is ample, if not you may need to spend another $50 or so on a quality power supply.

Are you upgrading because of faulty parts or because something you have runs too slow?

An Athlon XP 2500+ still runs all the new games just fine as far as I know. I would just wait.

A64 3400+ S754 and a 60$ board should work. Those 2.4 NC's were around 170 last I checked and they hold up pretty well against the new stuff.
