It's been a while since I did this and I'm not sure how. What are the steps in reinstalling Windows 98SE over the old version? This should maintain all of my other software and settings, shouldn't it? I did something to the registry files on accident when trying to irradicated a virus and now the machine is screwed up (video driver won't load and mouse won't work), that's why I just want to reinstall (not a clean install though if can be helped).

TIA,

Sal

To do a reinstall, just insert Win 98SE CD, It should ask for a reinstall option. Choose the reinstall option.

BTW, I hope you eradicated the virus...it could be other places besides the registry. Also, for future reference, you can restore a previous registry providing the problem occured within the last day or two . You have to do this in DOS mode.
(of course you do not want to restore a corrupted or virus infected registry)

p.s. Are you sure this was a virus? Do you have anti virus software?

I have NAV 2003 and was updating the definitions when it found this virus. It quaranteened it and then I deleted it. There was also something about a .reg file that this virus supposedly created that I deleted through add/remove programs. That's probably what did it. You think?

NM.. I figured out how to reinstall. I just got into the install folder on the disc while in the OS and reintalled it. Now everything is working except for my video card. It's still acting kind of flakey. I'm going to reinstall the drivers for it and that should fix it.

Thanks for the help!

If I even thought I had a virus, I'd do a clean install. Yes, it's a pain, but you won't have to worry about a virus 😀 ......Until you get another one 🙂 Just installing over the top doesn't do anything to a virus.
