I'm basically building a upper mid range gaming system. A64 3500, raptor 10000 RPM HD, Chaintech Nforce 4 Ultra, 1 gig patriot low latency pc3200. I need to build now because my old computer needs to be used right away as an office machine. My dilema is I don't want to upgrade the MB for a long while but do want to get the next gen PCIe card with 24 pipes which should be coming in a few months. Hence I am moving to a PCIe MB now and must scrap my 9700 pro with regret.

I need a filler card, mainly to play World of Warcraft, but do not want to spend even $175 for a 6600 GT when I'll be scrapping the card within a year. So, looking at neweggs refurbs, I can get a vanilla gigabyte 6600 for $68 or a 256 meg for $84. This is almost 1/2 the price of the cheapest non-refurbs I have seen and look like very good deals. I plan to try and overclock the card heavily as well as frying it would be no big loss anyways.

Anyone have experience with these and know if 128 to 256 megs will make much difference in this generation of card in a game like WoW played at 1600X1200, max settings? Will my performance be below the 9700 pro level. Any other recommendation in the sub $90 price range?

Don't bother with the 256mb version.

You can see how a 6600 would compare to other PCI-e solutions at tom's hardware

I think a $68 6600 is a good option for you.

You'll be waiting a while on the next gen parts. I think we'll see a paper launch around may/june. Actual products on shelves? Just look at what happened this past generation release.
