I'd suggest designing a device based on the concept of the good old catapault. Either that or something similar to a military mortar cannon (you could use a compressable spring to provide the firing power). The latter idea probably offers more capability to control the accuracy of the ball's "flight" ... trajectory in part controlled by angle of the mortar, which would be adjustable.

Superballs are easy, try using an egg, and no breakage allowed either ... ;)

Damn, some people have EASY physics projects. we had to do way harder stuff that catupult a ball 12 feet.

if there's no restrictions - mini potato gun. :)

However, explosives probably arent allowed, so do the catapult.

we had to make a home run with a device that didn't exceed 1' in any dimension (would fit in a 1'x1'x1' box). Our went close to 500' :)

you gotta have some sort of plan on how you're gonna do this. You can't just expect people to design it for you and give you detailed step by step instructions.

Midnight Rambler gave you a pretty good idea.

There's two ways to do it. Either choose a trebuchet/mongrel/catapul type launcher or a canon/artilery style one.

I suggest the canon style. Put the ball in a barrel. Mount the barrel on a base with adjustable launch angle, then come up with some sort of spring or elastic launching mechanism. Next, calibrate the launcher and you're set.

Bah! Next semester I'll have to make one that gfoes anywhere from 2 to 8 meters (it could be anyting in between, so you have to calibrate -- A LOT) and hit a target 10cm in diameter! the bonus on that project will be to hit a quater from 4 meters!!!! (10feet).

I'm thinking of an elaborate air pressure launching system....we'll see how it goes.

How about a cu ft of c4? ;)

Seriously though, what projectile did you have to launch? I would be very impressed if it were a baseball. Please elaborate.

It was a baseball (we had a whole baseball theme going). Our meathod used basically a potato gun with a 'special sause' in the combustion chamber. I forget what the stuff was composed of, but I can probably find the ingredients list around here somewhere.
