Can someone tell me the real difference between an Intel socket 370 cpu and a slot 1 cpu and which is the best.

The Slot-1 P3's are based on the Katmai core that has 512KB of cache running at half the clock speed of the core, and it is on the PCB that the CPU is sitting on.

The FC-PGA P3's are based on the Coppermine core, that has 256KB of "on-die" (read:cpu speed) cache that run at the full speed of the CPU.

The Slot-1 cpu's run waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay slower than their FC-PGA counterparts because of the latency and slower speed of the external cache. Unless you are given a *SWEET* deal on the old Slot-1 processor, I would shy away from the Slot-1 processors.

Although, some newer (533MHz and up?????) P3's are Coppermine processors dumped on a Slot-1 card. If you have the mobo to support it, they aren't a bad deal.

If you buy a Slot-1, just make sure you get one with a Coppermine core and not a Katmai core, and you should be OK.

Why this is mostly right, it is not 100% accurate.

The difference between Slot 1 and socket 370 CPU's is the packaging.

There are Slot 1 PIII's that do have the 512 KB of memory running off-die, which is slower. There are Slot 1 Coppermines that have the 256 on-die cache that run at the CPU speed.

All PIII socket 370 CPU's are based off the Coppermine core.

Intel and AMD have moved back to the socket because it is much cheaper to produce, and you can cool socket CPU's much better.

As far as which one is better. A Coppermine CPU will be the same speed regardless if it is Slot 1 or socket 370. However, you should go with the socket version, as I don't believe any motherboard makers are making any new Slot 1 boards.

not entirely correct as Abit makes a slot 1 m/board utilising the intel 815 chipset, the ABIT SH-6 815e SLOT1 ATA 100!
