Hi Experts,

Im planning to build a new PC. I'm not sure which power supply to buy. Please help me out.

  • Tagan stone rock 600w.
  • FSP Epsilon 80 PLUS 600
  • Cooler master extreme power plus 600w

i;m planning to purchase a core i7 - 930 processor. I'll also be running a HD 5750 graphics card.

I had almost decided on the CW Xtreme power plus until is read about bad reviews online. What do you think about this PSU (cooler master extreme power plus 600w) can i go for it. this one really fits my budget. Please let me know.

i;m sorry if this has already been posted somewhere else. Thanks in advance.

None of those PSUs is great. I don't know much about the Tagan, but the FSP Epsilon platform was known for high ripple under heavy load, and the CM "extreme power plus" is a severely budget-oriented PSU, with not very good reviews.

I would go with Antec, Corsair, Seasonic, Enhance, or Silverstone.

First, figure out how much power you really need, and leave a little room for future upgrades like more HD's, SLi etc...

http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

Power Supplies are the #1 fail product in PC's....you get what you paid for generally. Like Home receivers, the heavier the better! Look at the Newegg top rated for a general start in your search process....

Hi,

Thank you all for your reply. i'll forget buying CW extreme power 600W PSU for good.

I used that power calculator and got the power rating to around ~475 W (peak). This is for a single video card.

And I forgot to mention, No i have no plans of over clocking. I have plans (for future) of buying one more ATI card and running in dual crossfireX mode. For such a configuration the calculator gave me a requirement of ~510 W (peak).

However the ATI website for HD5750 reccomends 600W power supply for crossFireX. Please Advice. if i can go by the calculator ang get a 550 W power supply? ( i have given my complete PC spec below for refrence)

CPU: core i7 930
MB: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R
RAM: 2GB X 2 DDR3
GPU: RADEON HD5750 (i'll crossfire in future)
Optical drives: 1 DVD-RW
1 CD-RW (from my old PC)
1 FDD (from my old PC)
HDD : 500 GB SATA 7200RPM
IDE 5200 RPM (from my old PC)
FAN: 2 X 120mm fans
PCI: 1 USB 2.0 PCI card (from my old PC)

I dont want to throw away peripherals from my old PC. So, i'll put them in my new PC :)

Thanks in advance.

OP: Don't use those calculators. They are horribly wrong. If your PSU is Antec, Corsair, or Seasonic brand, the smallest PSU you can find is more than enough for 5750s (even CF.) If your PSU is a lesser brand, it would need to be rated much higher.

A $50 seasonic Ss-400et would do the trick.

The xfx 650 is excellent can be found for 70-90 depending on sales. It's modular and supports crossfire

Hi,

i have arrived at 3 power supplies now.

  • Seasonic S12 II Bronze 520W
  • Crosair Vx 550W
  • Crosair GS 600W

Most probably Crosair Vx 550 . Any suggestions among the above 3 ?

Thought of 550 Watts. May be i need buffer for future upgrades (crossfireX ).

Thanks in advance.

I'd go with the seasonic 520 myself

Take a look at xfx 650 too, not trying to be biased, it's just a great value

the VX550 is the highest quality design. Maybe not the most efficient, but it is more robust

We need more supporting data on the build/design quality attributes of the three PS listed, other than your say-so.
Gotta Link? :)

The Corsair is a more modern design first of all....an independently regulated design. The Seasonic in question, the S12II, is a group regulated design...a cheaper design.

And that difference really shows in the +12V rail stability, esp. when the +3.3V and +5V rails are lightly loaded (typical in modern computers) and the +12V rail is heavily loaded (again, typical in modern computers.)

Just search the reviews on JonnyGuru.com for them.

Personally, no matter how good a group regulated power supply performs, I'll take an equally performing independent regulated power supply any day. No effect on any rail from the performance, or lack thereof, from the other rails, a weakness of a group regulated design.

Hi,

Once again, thanks for all your reply. I have finally decided to go for crosair Vx550 (xfx 650 is not available here)

Hopefully its sufficient for my system. Please let me know if i need a higher wattage ( i'll go for crosair GS600 in that case).

Thanks in advance.

550 watts will power your system two to three times over. You aren't anywhere NEAR needing more.

This is what I was reffering to

Hi All,

I purchased parts for my PC today. Corsair Vx550 is not available (out of stock :( ). Vendor is suggesting me for Corsair Cx600. I thought of doing a background check before i purchase.

To the point now: How is Corsair Cx600 ? any suggestion / comments ?
