Need to know how to change hard drive to work on IDE controller after being set up on raid controller.

I am going to dual boot W98se and XP home. My hard drives were set up to work off of the HighPoint 370A onboard raid controller since other devices used up both IDE channels. When I switch the IDE 80 wire cable from the raid controller to the primary IDE channel, the hard drives are not recognized in the post but W98 will eventually load up. When I check in CONTROL PANEL everything locks up. I need to have the IDE controller recognize my hard drives but do not want to do a format. What do I need to do?
