Need to know about laptops...

So, I am starting school next year and I realize that I HAVE to have a laptop that I can haul around with me everywhere. I am not taking my desktop with me; so basically I will only have a laptop. So I am trying to figure out what kind of laptop will best suit me. I feel like I need something light weight, but at the same time I want enough features to work on things like Photoshop or watch a movie, etc. Bascially, even though I am not a huge gaming person, I would like to watch movies and mianipulate images (since I am into photography) and so forth. I am willing to pay up to maybe $1400, but cheaper the better. I was thinking something around 14" monitor should be good enough.

Any suggestions as to what I should look at? My boyfriend says IBM thinkpads or dell laptops are great. While others said if you are interested in photography and creative things, IBM sucks. Basically I am getting lots of conflicting info, and am super confused as to what I should look into.

look around at the major websites IBM, Dell, HP, Gateway, Sony and make sure you get education pricing if you are a student

Basically either IBM or Dell will do, heck Toshiba, Averatec will work also. It all comes down to how much you're willing to spend and what features you want. I'd recommend visiting Small Form Factors forums, there are plenty of laptop opinions/reviews.

The Dell Inspiron 4150 is a good balance between power and weight/size.

Edit: Okay, apparently they don't make the 4150 anymore. Maybe the 5100 or 5150.
