Would it be asking too much if i just went to a local best buy, bought a usb cd rom drive (if they even have any), install XP, then return it? Or do you think that would be rather risky?

I think it is unethical. In fact why did you even ask this question?

Risky, as in, they might not return it for me.

on the other hand, buy an used USB drive off eBay cheap. You may need it later as well.

Yeah, but the drive I'm getting for this laptop will be coming like next wednesday or thursday, and I would REALLY like to use it from now until then.

what about booting off network? Most new laptops support that feature. You then can install OS off networked drive. Also possible is USB mem key boot. Some memory keys can be made bootable.

Ditto on the ethics. Would you like it if someone did that to your business, whatever it might be? "Oh, I just needed the jumper cables for one start of my car, here they are back. Give me my money please."

Do unto others...

At least I don't overclock the crap out of a CPU, and then take it back if it's not up to spec or something stupid like that.
