Someone at work is resetting my 1600x1200 monitor from 85Hz to 60Hz. I don't know who it is yet, but I want to inflict great bodily harm on them when I find out.

Does anyone have some good ideas for payback?

Edit: It's a 21 inch Dell CRT. Everyone at work has this monitor.

Remove/rename C:\WINDOWS\system32\desk.cpl so they cannot open up display properites.

Note do this after setting it how you want it.

Seriously what kind of monitor? Wouldn't happen to be an LCD would it?

Are you sure it isn't some network-driven login policy? (I need to reset the refresh rate from 60 Hz to something reasonable every time I use any lab computer at my school with a CRT.)

Try rebooting and logging in again. If it goes back to 60 Hz, ask the admin to fix it for you.

It's my own damn fault for not locking the desktop, but damnit, if you're going to mess with a man's computer you don't change the refresh rate. :|:|

I can't even leave my cube without doing it much less the office due to security policies.

Just rename it to something like desk.cpl.bak. No need to delete it.

Just use the reforce utility to set it at 85hz. Once you've set it up, the pc won't list any mode below what you set as an available refresh.

Even faster is to hit the Windows Key+L, locks right away.

I already tried all of that just to rule those things out. I logged out and back in. I rebooted. I pushed all of the buttons on my KVM. It definitely isn't doing this by itself.

Set their computer up so that every time double-click, it plays "You Light Up My Life" from start to finish.

Scotch tape a couple of pins on the ethernet cable, just a couple though. If you get the right pins, you will still see lights, but not connection. PIA to troubleshoot.

Scotch tape over the LED if he has an IR mouse.

Take a print screen of the desktop as it is, then remove all the desktop items, and set his backround to the desktop image. None of the 'icons' will work, doesn't last that long though.

Find some good browser hijacker and install it on his machine. Or install Gator Advertising. Guaranteed to drive him insane.

configure net meeting remote desktop sharing and log on and change the resolution and refresh rate to something their local monitor cannot display. Then only YOU can see and control the pc outside of DOS and Win Safe Mode!

Cheers!

If he's using XP. 2K you need to use ctrl-alt-del.

Scotch tape over the laser if he has an IR mouse.

*optical mice use LED's not lasers.

I love doing the print screen prank...takes some people FOREVER to figure out :D

As for the refresh rate, find out who it is, and put a script on their computer that randomly renames every file on the hard drive when he logs on.

Some dells ship with a monitor utility that uses a key sequence to invert the screen. I used to do this to people as a practical joke. If you don't know what's doing it, you'll never get it fixed.

You could probably find the utility on dell's website and install it on their PC's, hide the executeable and just punch in the keys to make it invert. They'll come in, find their screen upside down, their mouse will work backwards, and find no menu or option to disable it.

If you can get into BIOS, DISABLE CPU L1 cache. Game over!

The system WILL work 100% but it will be about as productive as turning off your engine, getting out and pushing your car to work while a friend steers!

Cheers!
