Need to get sound on modem!! HELP!

I want to enable sound on my modem. I went to Control Panel > Modems > clicked on my modem > Properties, then I set the Speaker volume to the highest it will go. After that I went to the Connection tab, then clicked Advanced, then put the string M=1 in the Extra Settings box, which is supposed to turn the modem volume on (I have also tried M=3, which is supposed to make it EXTRA loud, but it did nothing.) I believe my modem came with software that silences the modem, and I want to make it so I can hear the sound of the modem again! Can I do this? I have a Lucent LT Win Modem made by Award Technology. Thanks!!

try uninstalling the drivers and then reinstalling them
just don't install the software that silences the modem this time
