USB cable may work although I've never tried that approach. I think ethernet may be faster though. Whenever I needed to back up data off my laptop, I hooked it up to my network via an ethernet cable and a gigabit router/switch, that worked very nicely.

Yup a crossover Ethernet cable or a standard cable with a crossover adapter, or a hub with two normal cables will network the two together, set up your drive shares and copy away. Other options are a good sized Flash (thumb) drive or an external hard drive.
