Need to get back into the admin account

My friend gave me computer and has an admin account for all the important files like games. He had his games only installed on his account and not on his sisters. But he lost the password, and I was wondering if anyone knew how to get around that issue or crack into windows to access the admin account. I dont want to format because of the files that are important on the admin account we dont want to lose. Thanks for anybody who can help or has tricks to crack it.

There's a program called Ultimate Boot CD, which has a password editor. You can only change the password, not recover the old one. It should do the trick though, unless you have encrypted files (which you will lose by doing this).

Easy.

Reboot into safe mode.
Log in as "Administrator" No password unless he set one during installation.
Remove password from account via control panel.
Restart computer normally.

Finished.

XP User account security isn't exactly great

If you mean you lost the 'Administrator' (the hidden one) account password though, then it gets a little more tricky.
