Here's the problem... I told someone I would be able to get all of their data off of their harddrive after it died. She told me she had a SATA drive.. I figured she knew what she was talking about. Figures out she has an IDE drive and my DELL Dimension 4700 can't read the IDE drives. What is a way I would be able to get access to this drive? Do companies do work like this? Like pay a certain amount of money and they will extract what you want from a HDD? Is there a workaround to this?

Thanks in advance.

Didn't even know such an adapter existed. I was going to suggest a hard drive enclosure - you'll be able to find a bunch @ Newegg. They're pretty easy and you simply connect to USB.

Is there particular reason why you can't use the built-in IDE connector on your 4700 motherboard? Realizing that you might have two optical drives connected to it already, you could temporarily disconnect one while you retrieve the data from the IDE hard drive.

EDIT: Or are you saying you already tried that and the BIOS simply wouldn't recognize the IDE drive connected via your onboard IDE controller?

That Coolmax unit should be as good as any - Newegg has dozens of similar units.

This is another option: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16812206002 (advantage of this is you get full speed of drive while the USB to IDE will get you only about 20MB/sec or so transfer rate).

There is a lot of that type of stuff here: http://www.geeks.com/products.asp?cat=HDD. And as another said, you can get a complete external HDD enclosure for the price of the Coolmax unit.
