Need to get a smog check

I know that I need to get the check engine light to disappear to pass a smog check, but is there any place where I can get the codes read for free? (Orange County, CA area)

I read that Autozone stopped providing that service because the feds were investigating them on it.

Thanks in advance!

Feds investigating them? Wha?

I'd call them and ask. Someone could be yankin' yer chain.

Shuck's and Auto Zone here in WA will loan you a code scanner for free. You have to leave your driver's license with them while you use the scanner though.

Some cars have a trick to get the odometer to display them as well.

My car if you turn the key from off to on three times, it'll scroll through the codes.

Haha, nice.

Doesn't matter though, they still hook up to your computer even if it's off for emissions.
