Need to get a new DVD player thinking of Upconvert

I don't want to get the HD-DVD nor blue ray because I don't want to get something to find it obsolete because of the competing format. I was looking at upconverts. Yeah I know you can't get 1080 out of 480. But my question is does the upconvert do anything at all to the DVD quality for HD. My DVD player for some reason only can do 480i so all DVDs look like shit on my HDTV. I'm thinking just to get a standard cheap progressive scan one. I'm looking though at getting upconvert if it makes a difference.....

If so what's a good upconvert. I heard all of them do it different based on the algorithm/processor inside.

Ironically, one of the better upconverting DVD players is the HD-A3.

That's what I've been hearing but I don't want to drop 200 to 300 on a dvd player for the upconvert option to find later the HD functionality is worthless.

this war will easily go on for another year or two anyway, at which point the upconverter you buy today will be nothing more than a doorstop, and the so-called winning format will have a much cheaper unit.

too bad you missed out on the $99 A2

just buy a damn HD DVD player....

i got the A3 for $159...with 10 free HD movies, i originally just wanted an upconverting DVD player, but the A3 does a great job at it...and it got 10 movies out of it. You'll spend a good $100 on a good upconverting DVD player...just psend a few more bucks to get a HD DVD player

At this point I couldn't see recommending a regular upconverting DVD player anymore with the prices of HD-DVD players.

Amazon has the Toshiba A3 for $180 with 7 free HD-DVDs.

You could go ahead and get a good upconverting SD-DVD player like an oppo http://www.oppodigital.com/dv980h/default.asp but the cost is going to be similar.

If you don't want to "get something to find it obsolete", then don't consider SD-DVD players at all. If you can get a good upconverting HD-DVD player for a comparable cost to a good SD-DVD player and it comes with 7 movies that are going to look better than all your other DVDs you already have, then why not do it? Who cares if HD-DVD wins out down the road?
