Hi,

I got a small problem here....
the fan on my TNT2 Ultra (yeah I know its old) got
very noisy recently. Can I just put some grease on
it to make it quite again? Which kind of grease should
I use and where do I get it?

Thanks

I think you'd better out a Blorb or a tennmax lasagna, if they will fit.

You can unscrew the fan housing and remove it from the heatsink. If you look on the underside of the fan there should be a little sticker there. You can remove it and put a little oil in the shaft opening. The opening is probably too small for grease, but any all-purpose oil or lock grease should do the trick. Give that a try and see if it helps.

Fans get noisey and eventually stop if they accumulate dust and go out of ballance and carry the extra load of dust that with humidity picks up moisture. remove it clean iy really thoroughly with brushes. and 95 out of a 100 it will run well another several years. I did this in my 133 pentium and in my refrigerator underside motor coo;ing fan, both fans had stopped and both were noisiest just b4 that.

I'd try some Graphite to lube it, and I'd also be hoofin it to the store for a replacement.

If it's a sleave bearing fan, then lube won't really do much good if the bearing is worn. I'd take the fan off and replace it, preferably with a ball bearing one. It's a pretty easy thing to find at an electronics store (not Radio Shack, though, their quality stinks).
