I installed vista on my secondary computer using this guide: http://11011.net/archives/000673.html
It worked very well, but I made a boo boo as I was cleaning up the remnants; instead of just deleting temp folders and /sources, I deleted /boot by accident. My mistake and inexperience with vista was at fault here, though I probably wont forget this one 🙁
Some of the stuff was in use and didnt get deleted, but bcd did. Upon reboot, the bootmgr notified me there is no BCD so the computer wont boot.
Vista seems to have an easy fix with the included fix boot option on the installation DVD. The only problem here is that I dont have an optical drive for this computer. As a last resort, I could detach the one on the primary rig and and hook it up, but I would rather avoid that hassle if possible (I have 4 hdds in the bottom bay of P180, cabling isnt exactly fun). My only usb flashdrive is 2GB large, so not all files on the dvd would fit on it (I already tried making the drive bootable and copying /boot and bootmgr at no avail). Another thing I tried was copying the BCD to the bootable flashdrive, but I kept getting an error saying the file is in use. I do happen to have a spare 2.5'' that only likes to work on the secondary computer (the one I am trying to fix). Gotta love a challenge eh? 😀
Is there a way to modify BCD for a computer other than the one you are working on? I googled for bcdeditor and bcdedit and all I saw was how to alter the booting sequence on the computer you are currently working on, which is not what I want.
If all else fails, I could try (sigh) to use the optical drive. Still, I would like to know if this is possible at all for the sake of learning. Thanks!
EDIT: a long due update here, I had finally broke down and hooked up the ODD temporarily taken out from the primary rig to have the OS installed on this machine; the installation went smoothly and it has been running fine ever since.
