Ditch the over-priced monitor and get a 22 inch samsung (i think one is priced at $300.) If you're running vista, I highly recommend 2 gigs of ram. You don't need that PSU, go with the 400 watt FPS for $40 bucks.

The case you selected sucks. Buy a centurien 5 (only $40.) You'll be glad you did.

IDE hard drive? You can grab a SATA 250 gig for just a little bit more. http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16822144417

Good luck.

Hello, since there are too many parts I disagree with I just rebuilt the whole system for similar money, here's my rough sketch:

Core 2 Duo E6550 @2.33Ghz $163
GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 $110
Case&PSU $55
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16811147001
7600GT (EVGA) $75
CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB $81
Seagate 250GB $68
LG DVD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16827136119
$28
Acer AL2016WBbd Black 20" 5ms $170

$775 total

Basically, if you wait for 22nd of july for E6550 to arrive, you can get this system which will perform a lot better than the one you built for only $100 more. Fast cpu, 2gb of ram, nice 20" widescreen, good video card. Best of luck.

I pulled the monitor out of the LCD thread on the video forums. It said it was a good choice for dealing with images.

I would recommend some better choices (the price of some components has changed or are out of stock, anyway). Since this is for your parents and gaming performance isn't a priority, a less expensive graphics card would more than fit the bill:

HIS Radeon X1650 256MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 = $56.00 AR

The individual Corsair modules can be purchased together in a kit for a few bucks less, plus you get CL2.5 modules instead of CL3.0. Even though current AM2 pricing is higher than similar S939 counterparts and DDR prices have fallen almost as low as DDR2, I would still recommend AM2 and DDR2 for future upgrade potential (availability of S939 models is dwindling, particularly dual core models):

AMD64 X2 3600+ Brisbane 1.9GHz (2x 512KB L2) Socket AM2 = $62.00 free ship

pqi TURBO 1GB (2 x 512MB) DDR2-800 Dual Channel Kit - $54.00 shipped

For the same price as the 160GB WDC ATA/100, you can get a 200GB SATA 3Gbps:

WD Caviar SE WD2000JS 200GB 7200RPM 8MB SATA 3Gbps - $55.00 free ship

Good no-frills AM2 motherboard with great BIOS refinement from ASRock:

ASRock ALIVENF6G-VSTA Socket AM2 NVIDIA GF6150SE + NF430 = $63.33 shipped

I wouldn't worry too much about your case choice. The CoolMax case is one of the best cases in its price range. Although it is a bit cheapish, there are many inferior cases for the same and even more money. I doubt you were expecting to get the sturdyness of a $65 case for $41, anyway.

Total = $625.00 (includes $200 for a monitor)

why are you going with an old AMD CPU and old DDR ram? give us a budget and we will build you the best system possible. there no point in getting yesterdays technology.
