Need to find the source of a quote

Need to find the source for the following quote:

"Too American to be Chinese, too Chinese to be American."

It does not have to be exactly the same, but should be VERY similar.

It should be a quote..haha Should be from a novel!

I think those types of distictions are so old (and common) that there really isn't really a source.

"too country for rock radio, too rock for country radio"

etc...
