I'm not positive, but I don't think RAM sticks support a specific channelling. It just depends on in your motherboard supports dual- or quad-channel memory. I'm not positive, I'll probably be corrected

Yeah it's not memory dependent, but CPU/Chipset dependent.

A motherboard that supports quad channel just uses DDR3... if you only have 2 stick in it, it runs in dual mode, 3 sticks, triple, 4 sticks, quad.

The important thing is making sure they are of the same specification... capacity, speeds, timings, etc. Generally you want 4 sticks of the exact same RAM, but you don't have to do that either.

Highly suggest that you pick your RAM based on the supported memory list for your motherboard though. With Dual-Channel you don't really have to be that picky.

so what your saying is that if i choose RAM that says its dual channel and get 8 sticks of it , it will work at quad channel speeds?

Yes... there's no such thing as "Dual", "Triple", or "Quad" channel memory, it's all DDR3: Double Data Rate, Type/Generation 3.

Dual, Triple, And Quad are how the CPU/Chipset/Memory Controller interact with the memory installed.

Like a 2-barrel vs 4-barrel carburetor... same fuel, same air, same engine... more through-put.
