Need to ditch AOL, what email program?

I have had AOL email since the late 90's and cannot change. The addresses are to mature.

I can no loger tolerate their crap software. I use it only to check email and that is it. The software will blue screen when used with a SSD hard drive, not to mention it is slow and locks up on any computer. They just program bad.

So here are the requirments:

1.) Need to be able to read email on the email software, but also have it leave a copy on their server so I can read online when not at home.
2.) If I read online when away, I need to be able to also have it appear on the email software at home.
3.) I have 4 email addresses, and need to have them all useable on one email program.

A few years ago I tried outlook 2003 and it did not work well. If I read online, it would never be there once I got home.

Believe it or not, I only first got AOL few years ago. I wasn't happy with my Yahoo or gmail and I ignored all the dissing and tried it keeping an open mind. I run AOL 9.7. This may sound odd, but, for me, it rocks. It is configurable in ways the others were not. And it's fast. And efficient. Re organization, SPAM filtering, and I now could not live without the carousel. It's free and works really well with my RCN broadband.

I also adore that when a new mail arrives it makes a little noise. And, being shallow, I also like when I open it Chris Rock greets me and when I close it, Benicio del Toro says "bye."

No hitting.

I tried the current build and did not like it so, I went back to 9.7.

What build of AOL are you using?

I have mechanical drives, so can not speak to how it functions with SSDs, or, if not well, why?

Never heard of this, just delved briefly, do you run the express free version or the paid for version?
paid, it's very cheap

and for those who use GMAIL and are sick of its fugly interface, this is the answer, it has labels support, is very snappy when getting emails/deleting them, has dropbox integration if you wanna quickly share a file. is compatible with all Thunderbird Addons

sort of like pale moon is compatible with all FF add-ons, Postbox is the best alternative to Thunderbird

Thanks for the info, I agree re gmail being fugly (also Less Than in other ways, but, again so was yahoo, so is Outlook).....but what I now run works for me, I am glad I did not buy into the dissing, tho I did for a long time.

I think the orgainzation of aol is nice, software is just too buggy.

I am running 9.6 and 9.7. Still is a ram hog, and will not run on a SSD.

I heah U. But for me, not at all buggy. Perhaps, if you used their software and got rid of 9.6, everything would be fabulous. It's possible and might be worth a try. Never good to run two versions of something at the same time.

If you upgraded from 9.6 to 9.7 did you choose upgrade from previous version?

And, in my now backup desktop with the Presler chip, running W7 32-bit with 3GBs of DDR2, no problem re RAM. Now, in this faster system with Lynnfield chip, running W7 64-bit and with 8GBs of DDR3.....well, U know.

I delved and could not find anyone posting issues with AOL 9.7 and SDDs, so I remain unclear if this is an issue.

Assuming you have broadband, what kind?

You don't have that McAfee AOL is in league with, do U?

And, can U share yr system specs? You list, I think, 3 computers, one, a server; is this issue happening with the Dell Latitude with 2GBs of RAM? All of them? I am confused. But that appears the one with the Samsung SSD.

Maybe it's just me, but I always wanna know if something's not working as it should, WHY?

I mean, before I assume there isn't something important for me to learn and I should just I dump something for the wrong reasons.

Again, I would suggest to the OP he retain 9.7, uninstall 9.6 clean up junk and observe what happens.

Try out using thunderbird with outlook.com (if you don't mind microsoft) or else you can try getting an address from here https://www.gmx.com

If you read GMX's privacy policy, you wouldn't ever use it again

I used it for a while, but after I read their privacy policy, I quickly deleted my account. They will sell your info to organizations without your consent

I applaud this!!!! And, earlier, came upon this related horror on Huffington:

And, given the emerged reality of Chrome, all things Google, I would also include gmail.

I also, earlier came up this also on Huffington:

Color laser printers? Seriously?????😱

Fast, stable, innocuous interface (but configurable), aggregate other accounts (not free)

I've has it for the last 15 years.

did you read my above post????????? Mail.com / GMX are the same company, same crappy privacy policy, they will share your name, info, etc. without your consent. When I contacted them, they also told me that means they can sell your info to database companies and such

ever wondered where you get all the spam from? that's how

Gotta say, compared to others, I get very little SPAM. But still get occasional Nigerian lowlife telling me I have 9 bazillion $ waiting 4 me, all I gotta do is..... Hard to believe anyone could fall for that merda, but it seems some people actually do.

But I started blocking the addresses and that is working.

Thanks for alerting me on their privacy policy.. i won't be recommending them again.

I guess at this point it's probably best to get your own mail server with your domain?

I, for one, am getting my own PLANET.

One where my Blue Devils don get knocked out/UPSET early in the Madness, and everything is safe and nobody is tracking yr every movement and thought and keystroke and device, now, even including color laser printers (Wut???)

Wait, why the heck are people even talking about changing e-mail providers?

Based on the OP's post, it looks like when the OP tried using Outlook 2003, it was configured to use POP3 instead of IMAP. If you want things properly synced, you should use IMAP (really, POP3 is a dinosaur!). The problems the OP described are consistent with using a POP3 setup instead of a proper IMAP setup and had nothing to do with Outlook.

Try Outlook. Or Thunderbird. Or Windows Live Mail. Or Postbox (forked from Thunderbird by TB's former lead dev). It doesn't really matter which software you choose, as they're probably all better than whatever crap software AOL produces. The key is to set it up using IMAP and not POP3.

"Probably" being the operative word. Never belongs in any differential assessment.

To be clear, I an not running both versions of AOL. 9.6 did not work. I later tried 9.7 thinking the bugs would be worked out. I installed the SSD into my D820, did a fresh install of W7x32 bit. As soon as you install AOL and open the program, blue screen. I tried for days. Formatting, reinstalling, etc. Throw a platter hard drive in, works perfect.

Tried another computer, same thing with the sammy 830 series. Like I said, not sure of other brands of SSD's.

Many thanks for this clarification, yes, I was confused; thought U were running both.

Well, this sure is mysterious! And so, also interesting. What I might try at this point, is booting into Safe Mode with Networking and see if you can install it normally and get it to work that way.

I would also download Whocrashed and run it and see what it comes up with. Driver issues? Software conflict? Sumthin you might be able to nail from the report, given U R getting BSODs. this is starting 2 sound like a software conflict to me, tho why the association with that individual SSD I do not know.

But I would like to know.

Pls get the free version.

I use gmail which I like a lot but whatever you choose, go with IMAP. POP3 is to IMAP what push to talk is to the telephone. All of your email is stored server side, and whatever devices you use can interact with it. Therefore, your smart phone email is in sync with your desktop email is in sync with your laptop email, etc.

Thunderbird is excellent as a client.

As for gmail, the reason I like it is because you can easily check all of your email accounts in one place. I have 3 older POP only email accounts in addition to the gmail, and gmail can actually check those accounts and put the emails with gmail. You can still send emails via those accounts through gmail. It's really nice having one inbox for all of my email, yet still having the power to use any of those email accounts as I see fit through the same interface.
