Need to devise a cat trap

I've got a sandbox in the backyard that a neighborhood cat has recently discovered. I want to catch the little critter and see if he has a tag so I can identify the owner. I suspect it is the lady across the street, as I have seen her cat wandering every now and then.

Anyway, I'm thinking of using one of those motion detectors and an AC motor I have to pull up or drop down a cage over the sandbox upon Mr Kitty's arrival.

any thoughts or ideas??

some would say you can only build a great cat trap by building a better mousetrap...

Just buy a large animal trap.

Or call your city's animal control center and see if they'll lend you one. My city helped me catch all the squirrels that had taken roost in my attic that way.

If I had time I could try to help you devise a trap. But cats are notoriously hard to catch in a trap. The easier solution is to to what everyone else does. Get a ~$5 piece of thin plywood and use it as a cover to the sandbox.

you return cat trap to shelter. Shelter returns your $30.00

That's what I would do.

If it is actually someone's pet, chances are pretty good that it'll let you walk up to it close enough to see whether it has tags or not and possibly even close enough that you can check out the tags. Otherwise, find out if a local animal control/human society/animal shelter will let you use one of their humane traps.
