Right now i'm working with a pc that someone just noticed the CPU fan on it died. Yes, i know, i'm working on getting a fan ASAP.

Unfortunately, it's a server, and the person NEEDS it running right now, and unfortunately, the owner of the server doesn't know what processor it is.

I can see the black pieces around the CPU (while it's on) that say Intel on them, and they have numbers and stuff on them:: and i believe i remember seeing once that you can determine the processor somehow from the numbers on them. I can't turn off the PC at the moment and pry the dead fan off, so I need to try to determine the processor version from the black piece.

Can anyone help me figure out what pentium this is? Can you tell me what number on them the pentium version is determined from?

Thanks

I had a similar situation - so I setup 2 floor fans to blow into the system for cooling until we were able to down the system and replace the defective fan. This was a mini-computer, but I see no reason it should not work for a PC based server.

To add to the good advice already given, Intel's CPUID utility here will tell you using software. You shouldn't need to reboot, just install it.
