My "C" Drive is a SSD and I have my W7 OS on it.....I try to keep BIG Programs [ie - Games etc.] on my "F"" Drive. My "C" Drive only has @ 15 GB FREE of 167 GB. I have more than once searched and searched again the contents on the C Drive trying to remove what I safely could - and have....but NOT enough. I am trying to prepare for a W10 install and NEED more room on C. I KNOW it's there....BUT do not know what I can safely remove??? I mean.....been using it for maybe four years, have NO BIG Games or anything on C.....and it's Size continues to GROW.....I had CCCleaner analyze everything on C....and it came back with 15K MB's of miscellaneous flies??? And my Registry alone if cleaned would ADD a lot but I cannot even find on CC Cleaner IF it Auto backs up the Registry before it cleans it out.
If U might know of a SAFE and Sound Program to analyze a drive like this and tell me what SAFELY can be removed - PLEASE - tell me, I will not be able to go onto W10 until I do something like this.

THANKS, michael:\

I suppose you could reallocate page file to "F".

Historically I found that it is best to not go much below 25% reserve space on the main OS partition..(That was with a mechanical HDD and older WIN OSes such as XP. At the level you are now at the system probably wouldnt de-frag which might not be applicable now for an SSD. WIN XP requirement is 15% minimum reserve.)

Sounds like you should bite the bullet & get a larger SSD as generally, storage space seems to get less with time (eg, install new programs, service packs, OS updates, etc.).

Insufficient space could even result in a BSOD while your smack in the middle of some critical operation.

The Winsxs folder will almost always appear to be growing. It isn't, but that is an NTFS limitation, so we'll have to work around that.

1. Make sure that you are running Disk Cleanup through Windows. And when you do, make sure you are telling it to clean up System files.

2. Disable hibernation. Tutorial here:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/920730

3. You may want to further limit the size of system restore, if you are using it.

4. If you have never tried WinDirStat, you should. Great program for seeing where your data is going: http://sourceforge.net/projects/windirstat/

Another thing you might want to consider is backing up your data, wiping the drive, and doing a clean install. Labor intensive, but worth it in the long run as your computer will shed the accumulated dreck and be a lot more responsive.

I'm sure there will be some great Black Friday deals on SSDs to take advantage of if you decide to get a bigger SSD.

possibly look at getting rid of all restore files except the latest. Clear out your 'downloads' folder, etc.

If you can't locate what is taking up your space, no one here is going to educate you on everything that could possibly be on your drive and if you should delete it. Instead, save information you still need on another hd, backup anything you know you can't be without, and just wipe windows and start from scratch. It is amazingly liberating when working on a fresh windows install with a new drive.

TKS to ALL! : Ketchup, RATS, the Hibernation Tip would not work on my W7 System. I have Cleaned out my Downloads File! Went inn to check on how much Disc Space was being used for Restore Points....and it was like 37GB on a 687GB Drive....read recommendation to set that to at minimum of 10%.....did not go that far......but raised it to 40%.
I have BAD/GOOD News...I was in my Documents Folder and found that ALL my PDF Files, I guess, had been corrupted, could not open any of them, had a lot of Manuals etc......I Deleted them ALL. My C Drive went fm 15GB FREE to 91GB FREE out of 167GB....no with my Restore Points increased to 40%.....I have 88.4GB FREE. It's a RELIEF to have some breathing room for my upcoming W10 Install........NOW to finally purchase an External HDD so I can Clone everything in case W10 throws me a DEATH Wish!
Does anyone here know IF I was to use CCleaner say to clean my Registry and/or C Drive - does it FIRST make a viable Backup prior to doing the actual CLEAN?

THANKS! michael:sneaky:

You get prompted to backup what it will remove. It will be a file that you can just double click on to restore. Run the registry cleaner multiple times backing up before each deletion until there are no entries shown.

I have never, ever, had an issue with CCLeaner messing up my system when using the registry cleaner.

It would be a good idea to do a backup before running that Win 10 upgrade. If you had corrupted PDF's to the tune of 50+ gig something is not right with your system...

also I find spacesniffer to be nicer than windirstat.
