Need to cool my R9 290 VRM 1 any tips?

I am going to increase my airflow in my case over the next week to see if I can get these 100c+ temps down, I have tried refitting the VRM heatsink but it hasn't worked so might need to try a different thermal pad. For the short term 100c temps isn't bothering me to much as they are rated for 125c but it isn't good for life expectancy.

Have you tried it without the heatsink? When I liquid cooled my 7950 I found that the VRM heatsink I was using actually increased temps. I'm running naked vrm's now with a side case fan and have reduced temp by 10-15c

No I haven't, I don't really want to either as I am sure I can drop the temperatures somehow. Thinking of high quality thermal pads but they are difficult to get in the UK. Found some that are 6w/mk though.

EDIT: Also if you water cooled it then you would have a water block over it which would cool it.

redmod. I used a cpu cooler on the gpu.

I've heard fujipoly makes an excellent pad, was going to try it but ended up not needing it.

High VRM temps generally have 2 causes imo. First, the heatsink that cools the VRM is a single unit that also cools the memory chips. Second, the air that blows over the VRM heatsink is already much warmer from going through the GPU so it won't remove as much heat from the VRM heatsink. Naturally the result is the relatively high VRM temperatures that you are experiencing.

On my 280x I ended up with something similar to this.

VRM temperatures dropped anywhere between 10C and 15C depending on the room temperature.

Do you already have the Gelid VRM kit for the R9 290?

No I don't as it is only available in the U.S and it would cost me £15 to get it imported, might do it but I reckon getting better thermal pads might do the job.

I'm using this on my cards and it works fairly well as long as you have a fan blowing over it.

Think this might be my problem, but I do not have a side door with fan mount :(
