Need to connect to PC at home from work

PC at home using Windows XP with broadband, and was wondering for a easy way to connect from work to this PC.
I know XP comes with remote desktop and assistance but with assistance you need port 3389 and someone the other end to accept. With remote desktop it looks like you have to a user adding for permission to connect and how do you do this for somone not on your LAN??

As others have said, try Real-VNC or one of its variants (Ultr@VNC at sourceforge.org, Remote Administrator, TinyVNC, etc.). All are free to try, many are just plain free unless you choose to donate to the cause... You can also get OEM version of PC Anywhere v.11 for less than $15. via pricewatch, if you'd rather have something commercial.
. I'm about to try one of them (probably Ultr@VNC) to help a friend with her computer about 1200 miles from here.
