Need to connect laptop computer to internet during east coast road trip.

I've been asked to research information for a business colleague who needs to make a business road trip along the east coast but still be able to connect his laptop to the internet. He has a Motorola PCS now but says he has too many connectivity issues(dead spots) when he travels with it.
What to do, what to do.

How about a Cantenna hooked up his laptop? Netstumbler and Cantenna might do the trick.
