I need to connect a 2nd computer in the basement (2 floors away) to my main computer. My main computer has Cable Internet with a "wired" router.

Here's the issue...I need to keep my "wired" connection on my main rig because I also have a TIVO video card plus I use remote access to work and which will not allow my main rig to be on a wireless router.

Is there a way I can transmit wireless internet signal from my main rig to the 2nd computer in the basement for internet access.

thx

1. Replace your router with a wireless router -- as far as I know all wireless reouters include a wired switch/hub and your main will be on that, not the wireless.

2. Run a wired connection to the basement. What does the existing telephone wire look like?

Hey Paladin

didnt you mean to say on #2 to run a wireless connection to the basement instead of a wired? If i need to run a wired connection, I dont need to buy the wireless router...I already have a wired router.

I'll have to check on the telephone line. What are you thinking ?

thx

Telephone wiring, not line. Many newer (less than 30 years old) had a multi-pair telephone cable strung from MPoE to jack to jack to jack to jack. Some have several multi-pair runs back to the MPoE. If you have two spare pairs in your telephone wiring they can be used to run an Ethernet connection. (10baseT was designed to use existing telephone wiring.)

At the phone jack location near your router, how many pairs are there? How many separate telephone lines (numbers) at your house?
