Stupid network at work. Blocks everything. No yahoo/homail etc. I know there's a work around using something called idzap but that is paid. Any one know the way to get around this. Wanna just check yahoo & hotmail.

it's been posted, and was locked....do a search in off topic for "Yahoo", current messeges, and in title only

should be on page two...only locked thread on the page

If your work doesn't want you doing it and has made a point to put protocols in place to disallow that kind of activity at work, you shouldn't be doing it.

We use messengers and stuff here but they blockled the mail servers some days ago. The crappy part is that you just can't use the official mail. The spam filter is so sensitive that it blocks near;y everything. Even the internal mail sucks. The main reason is coz I do web development and use alot of freewares or sharewares where you have to enter a valid email for key. The spam filter doesn't allow anything with html in it so poop can't register. This is what my boss says regsiter with yahoo or hotmail and check it from home and print out your keys and stuff. Who want's to take home work.

He might just want to be checking it on his lunch break. If so there is no harm in that. Odds are they blocked it so that idiots wouldn't open virus loaded e-mail attachments.
If you're checking it while you're supposed to be working though you're just asking for trouble.

My job gives me a great incentive to not check my e-mail while working. The longer it takes me at a customer site, the longer it takes me to finish my day and get home or to the hotel.

IMHO it's a very bad idea to try to get around work firewalls. People get in trouble for doing stupid stuff (like bringing in virus-contaminated files from home), but there's no way to explain trying to get around a firewall.

They obviously don't want people checking email from work, and I guess that's that. Where I work, they put trying to get around the firewall in the same category as theft of intellectual property. Serious stuff.

By all means, use that explanation or rationalization or whatever else you want to us as a request with upper management or with IT to allow you access... but don't break the rules to accomplish the same task. If they turn down your request, then find another way to do it.

Yup. Working for T-Mobile and GM, you had absolute access to the web, but weren't allowed to actually browse to any site that wasn't on a specific list of acceptable sites and they were all work related. That's a stupid way to manage a network, but that's how it was. If you were caught once, you were given a written warning. If you were caught again, you were fired.

Yep...my security policy (which specifically allows personal e-mail so long as it is not interfering with your individual performance or company business) allows for you to be fired and even sued for damages for circumventing its precepts.

Take care here. Is it worth getting fired over? Would it take you so long to print the keys out from home? Would it be so hard to try and work with your supervisor and the IT director to get the policy loosened?

The aforementioned security policy of mine also allows for exceptions when justifiable.
