Need to change MoBo on a WinXP rig

Folks, a friend of mine had his mobo die on him and he's running WinXP Home. As I understand most times when replacing a mobo, especially when using a different model, WinXP will lock up since it sees too many hardware changes. Is there a way around this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.🙂 TIA.

Sometimes you can get away with doing a windows xp repair or you can try uninstalling the devices and turning the computer off. I don't recommend doing this though, format c: is the best way to go.

Unfortunately it has got to the point where the system won't even power up now. I was afraid we'd have to do the "format C:" dance. I was just hoping that there was an easier way of getting back into it without losing what he has on the HDD now. I've never used the recovery console before so I'm real hesitant about going that route. Knowing my luck I'd screw things up even worse! LOL!😛

in the case of via/amd chipsets. I successfully migrated from an amd761>kt333>kt333>kt400(XP had no issues with detecting the hardware changes..) ..on same XP install(every move required a ph call to MS tho..wasn't a hassle..in your case.tell them the mobo died)..when I went nf2..did a fresh install tho.goodluck 🙂Recently did a kt-7v to a kt3ultra..XPPro didn't even quibble about the hardware change(just the normal found new installing ready to use..) in that instance as I'd already had installed the software for the newer mobo right before the swap.

No need to enter the recovery console if you want to use the windows xp repair feature.

Just boot up with the cd run setup. After the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen press the R key to repair Windows XP.

I haven't seen the repair option, in the XP setup, not fix it. But if it doesn't, you can still kill windows without losing any data. Recommend to use ERD Commander or NTFS-Pro <---those two only if are using ntfs format..a regular bootdisk is fine if in fat..rename the Program Files dir. Now install XP again and when it comes to the screen saying windows is there you will have an option to delete it with "L" key. This way nothing gets formatted away. You will have to go to doc settings to get the old My Docs etc.
