I have a motorola Gateway. It is a Cable modem and wireless router in one. The problem is that It only has one ethernet connection. I really don't want to buy a switch just to get more wired connections. I do have a Belkin wireless router though.

My gateway IP for the motorla 192.168.0.1.
My belkin wireless router gateway is set to 192.168.2.1.
I stopped broadcasting the SSID of the belkin.
I used the option to make it so that it is a wireless access point (even though I turned off wireless).
I changed the IP of the belkin to 192.168.0.254.

I tried logging back into the 192.168.0.254 access point but its messed up and I can't log into anymore.

Any ideas? How about some help from scratch?

All you need to do is plug the cable modem into a LAN port rather than the WAN port of your Belikin router and it will become a switch, anything plugged into the remaining 3 LAN ports will get IPs from your modem/router combo device.

Like others have said.. Go into the properties of the Belkin and turn OFF the DHCP service that routers have. Also set it to obtain an IP automatically and it should get one from the modem. That should be all you need to do other than figur eout which port to plug the cable into as that sometimes depend son the brand.

To be honest, that's going to be a real pain. There's a bunch of features to disable and you might end up breaking the Belkin while you're at it. Switches are cheap - $10-$15 and you won't have to mess with your other router.
