Mileage, comfort and reliability would be the three things I'm looking for. Aside from the usual suspects (Civic, Corolla, etc), are there any other cars I should be looking at?

You could probably get something heavily incentived like a Ford Fusion in the $16K-$17K range depending on what options you want. It won't get the mileage of Civic/Corolla but it's a larger vehicle as well.

But if the three things you listed are truly your priorities, it will be hard to go wrong with Civic/Corolla. The Honda Fit might be a choice as well, it's surprisingly roomy for a subcompact.

If mileage is important, stick to the smaller vehicles. The usual suspects you mentioned are usual suspects for a reason. They fully represent your three criteria. A slightly used Prius would probably fit your budget too.

I wouldn't really call the Fit overly comfortable.

You get a nice new 2008 Accord LX for a shade under 20K with a little nagging.

mazda3 is a pretty good deal at the moment. I saw an auto 3 HB advertised for 16.7k. Not a bad deal at all.

the best deal, hands down, is the Hyundia Elantra. There is 2k in incentives plus the normal room for talking down the price. My gf was looking at them yesterday and teh salesman came over. He asked what we would like to buy the car for, I offered 13.7 to try to get him off our backs (sticker was 16.8k). he just reposnds, I think we can do that and starts t get the keys for they car. We wanted to look at other cars first, so we left as he was getting the key. Not a bad deal though.
