i am building a pc for someone who does work with electron microscopes. she edits the negatives and all that kind of 2D stuff.

my question:

what is a good video card for her (i think mostly 2D applications)

also, what is a good scanner that scans negatives?? (money is not a concern for this)

thanks!!!

good luck
i work in neuroscience at usc
most imaging here is by a ccd camera on a light table with NIH scion 6.x running on either mac or pc

if she works with that kind of stuff then she should get an oem and have the tech/warranty

Look into getting a scanner that can quicly scan the slides, somthing that uses a USB, USB2, Firewire(ieee1394), or SCSI interface. I would steer away from the SCSI interface because you will have to buy a separate card for it. Firewire cards are getting pretty cheap, so that may be an option. USB will always be around, and it has decent speeds.

As far as scanners, will you be scanning the little 35mm slides or are they big negative type things like an x-ray? If it is the 35mm ones, buy a slide scanner. you will probably only be able to scan slides and 4x6 photographs on it, but they have decent resolution. Or look into a flatbed with VERY high resolution. Greater than 1200x1200 optical. Somthing like maybe a high end Epson or HP. I am sure that there are others, but I am not an expert.

Video cards - GO with a Matrox maybe with a dual head and a digital connection for a FP LCD monitor. That will make going to 2 monitors, or upgrading to a LCD much easier. and they have good 2d quality.

I hope that this gives you a good idea.

ok i think it's still better if she gets a dell workstation or something along those lines since its university property and grant money

but a good vid 2d card would be a matrox g450 ddr 32 mb dual head for around $80

for some reason it cheaper than the g400 which is not ddr

but you can use the g450 on non ddr mobo and sys ram

i would have gotten one my self recently, have a dual monitor set up now, but already have a agp vid card that i paid good money for

also if she wants to image 35 mm film then film scanners from large name brand camera companies like nikon would be good

i would get separate 35 mm film and 8.5 x 11 film scanners

the ccd camera i mentioned before is for autoradiographic cassette film about 8.5 x 11 in size and it allowed for live 'recording' of the film
