Hey yall.
Ok, I'm interested in this girl..
and.. she needs a PC..
so.. I want to build her a PC
I want it to be cute to look at, small, and light and quiet
(I know.. it all comes down to the monitor.. ..but LCDs are too expensive..so it's no go..)
Don't need anything spectacular.. she would only do web surfing and word processing..
so.. how should I go about to choose a cute case and the rest ot them..

I'm thinking this could be the perfect use for a "burbie". :) Actually, that's a somewhat serious suggestion.

Alternatively, those little SVxx systems from Shuttle are cheap and small. I guess you could call them "cute" but they are pretty practical and pretty cheap. Newegg has the SV25 right now refurb'd for $150. Which is a great price for a case, mothreboard, graphics, LAN, 1394, etc. With a CPU, memory and a HD, you could build a decent PC that's super quiet and very small for under $350 total.

Shuttle boxes are very cute.

It partly depends on if you want cute-cool or cute-pokemon etc.

I figure cute-cool has more staying power. The shuttle barebones sytems come in socket A, socket 478, and socket 370 versions. They are all Flex-ATX boxes with power supply and mobo. I figure the best chance at quiet is getting the socket 370 version and using low speed fans throughout with a Seagate ATA IV drive. If it's just for what you say it is, a celeron Tualatin, or even a C3 (can be run without a fan) should do the trick. I have been wanting to build one of these for my GF for a while.

The Athlon/Duron and PIV versions would have a lot more power, but it would be hard to keep such a small case cool with low speed fans.

If you can't go LCD, then just make sure to think colour. Don't get anything computer-beige. I hate that colour, and girls probably do even more than me. Around here, they have those LG monitors with the retro look and the speakers on the sides for pretty cheap. 17" flat CRT, comes in a few colours, looks kinda cool in a dorky way. If you can find one of those, I bet that would be better than my boring institutional Samsung.

or if you really wanna get on her good side...get a Mac G4 Cube...seriously...no fans and no noise. It has a top loader slot DVD or Cd drive and Radeon graphics. very basic even by mac standards, but it will do everything yo said she needs and more. It looks like a toaster when the CD pops out :p

as a plus she won't have to mess with the Windows OS which we all know can be painful even to veterans at times.

Oh I'm totally the person to ask about girly pc's! Well, actually not. My PC is the tomboy of girlie PCs as you can see here. I would get her one of those shuttle dealies. They're great and quiet. They're a little more than just a p4s533 though and a cheapo 8meg video card which is all she's likely to need. Get her a 1.6a. Not for the overclocking but the noise. With this processor you won't need any case fans for rock solid stability. Also, the stock cooling on it is sooooo quite. You just might get her fix. That's true, you know, girls sometimes don't want to have a cutsie case. If you're building it for her you might want a nice big phalic symbol case :)

Hummm ... how much you want to spend with this girl ... because you can always go with a small (13.3 or 14.1) LCD screen.
Remember that, if you eventually go steady, she'll expect computer-priced presents from you! ;)

I have a gf-related question too. She wants a really cheap computer (like 200-300 range) and I can't seem to find any small online vendors that will configure one in that range. I don't want to get parts and assemble one cause I suck but anyway, do you guys know any online sites that will let you configure for real cheap pc's (the cheapest I've seen on sites are around 500 and those perform way better than what she's expecting). She doesnt care about sound, video, doesn't want a burner, doesn't care about monitors, doesn't care about anything really. Just wants something to check her email, go on the net, and listen to music.

The cheapest I was able to find was $400 cdn for a cheap C3 system. That's like $275 or something US. I don't know how useful a computer like that would actually be though. Make sure to put popple stickers on it :)

Been reading in yesterday's SJMercury an article about Lindows etc..., anyway the author mentioned the Microtel PC (www.buymicrotel.com), which you actually can order from Walmart (www.walmart.com), the cheapest model is $299 ... comes with Lindows (which would probably serve well for tasks your girlfriend expects to have) , but you can wipe it and put some other OS on it.... the better deal seems to be the cheapest e-machines model at $399 after rebate, but with XP Home preloaded (but I didn't find it on their page today for that price which columnist Mike Langberg quotes) .

Anyway, in both cases you don't need to assemble anything, just buy 17" monitor , which you can get around $75-100 these days (at Fry's for instance; they carry $299 GQ brand PC's as well with Linux preloaded)...

Your total would be under $400, and I don't think you can get any better deal anywhere if you think about factory new PC (what I'd suggest if it's supposed to be a gift).

Good Luck!

If I'd myself have a budget like that and didn't want to build it for some reason, I'd get any of these $299 boxes plus 15" monitor, wipe the silly Lindows and put SuSE or other friendly distro on; if it wouldn't somehow go along with the hardware inside, then a copy of Win9x which you gotta have somewhere around the house...

Tell her to get an Imac. Stylish and functional.

If you build her one it'll have to be good!

you can remove the plexiglass siding from the aluminum to put pictures etc behind there
I pulled this from one of the reviews at newegg on the GbOx! I like it but I personally think you should get her the black evercase and the logitech cordless mouse freedom package that is optical and a nice monitor a CD RW drive and then load it with some slow jams like the ones you jam out before you and your girl are about to get it on! Then when you give it to her you can set the mod and then work your magic, Oh i guess your gonna need some speakers also, Acually find out if she has a sterio and if she does run the pc to that I bet she will dig that! No printer then she will need to ask to use yours, and if you are going to show her things make sure you explain with 5 dollar words instead of 10 dollar words, this just scares people (not saying that she does not know things about Pc). Or maybe you just want her to come over and then you can both reserch things on the net and get to know each other, and if she does not want to do this you know where you stand! If thats the case rape her on the price charge her double or maybe triple that will straighten her out!

Burbie isn't too bad for a chick. Some of those other ones are for little kids though. I would go for something small and sleek. I don't have any suggestions except for a Micro ATX of some sort.
