I need to build a cheap system for a friend of mine. I need everything except for a monitor, keyboard and mouse. The pc will only be used for surfing, burning cds and ms office. I have been out of the loop recently and I'm not sure whats good for the money these days.

Thanks

i'd say you go in for a duron based solution...its the absolute bang for the buck!
pair a duron 800 with a shuttle or msi board + 256mb sdram + 20 gig hdd + a cheap burner from yamaha or plextor and you are all set:)

I agree with the Duron solution or an older Tbird which are now dirt cheap, on a cheap $70-90 mobo, add in 256MB of ram and a 30-40Gig HDD (for any extra $20 you can pick up a 40GIG as opposed to a 20GIG HDD, $1 dollar a Gigabyte? come on) and a LITEON burner, just as good as plextor or yamaha and about 1/2 the price, I reccomend the 16 or 24x version burners which run about $75-90 shipped from Newegg

absolutely Duron but get DDR RAM and board for easier upgrades in the future!

My brothers machine was a cheap one:

Duron 850
ECS K7S5A Lan & Sound onboard
Hercules GF2 MX-400
256 MB Infineon DDR
Cheapass Case with 300W PSU
LG 52x CD

The rest I had lying about or came from my dads old system (sold it without HDD):
2x 20GB HDDs
and my old 2x HP Burner
Samsung Syncmaster 17GLSi
Keybd and Rodent

Screen and Desktop untensils you have already so get a cheapish 40GB 5400rpm drive (Maxtor is a good mix between cheap and reliable - at least around here) and a LiteOn burner.

I'm not a Celeron fan, my suggestion is go with Duron ... you can buy Duron 850 for $38 and thermaltake Volcano II for $8 from newegg. THen buy mobo either Epox 8KHA or ECS, although i heard lots of trouble about ECS. With ECS you can buy cheap ass PC133 memory, EPox only use DDR so the price is double if not triple. Definitely buy 40GB, 20GB is not practical anymore and expensive. Good Luck!
