Need to build a workbench.....

I am planning on building a workbench this weekend, to work on my guns on.(It sounds like a good project at least). I wouldlike to see some of your layouts and PLANS if you have them, Of workbenchs you have around your house.

I just want something basic and sturdy, I plan on hanging pegboard behind it to hold some of my tools.. I also plan on putting a small drill press on there for misc stuff, and a small vise, so I need help with a design sturdy enough for the vise so I can do some twisting, I also plan on building a rack to hang my dremel from and use the snake attachment.

If you can provide me with some pictures of your workbenches, that would be great......, Plans would be EVEN BETTER.

Also what can I coat the wood with to make it chemical resistant, that way cleaning products will not hurt it....

Thanks,
Josh

Take a look at some of these free workbench plans.

Perhaps you'll find something like what you're looking for.

As far as coating the wood, if you use a plywood/particle board top, you could always put "Formica" on it.

Yea I was thinking about putting something like that on top, but I like the wood look though.... But its not nessicerally the most practical thing. I think I have a design I want to use.

This, And put pegboard up behind it and bolt it to the wall in the garage (unfinished so 2x4 are exposed), I think this will be sturdy enough for what I want to do.

Before I moved out, my brother and I made a workbench: Gallery Link

My brother drafted the plans himself, he's always been good at that stuff. After it was completed, the only change I would've made is to bring the lower shelf up a little bit. We did eventually add a pegboard behind it for the majority of the tools, and mounted a solid little vice on it.

We thought we might have to attach it physically to the wall, but his design was sturdy enough that we only needed to anchor it into the floor supports above (was deployed in the basement).

If you've got the time and resources, you could try making the bench top out of butcher's block. It'll take nearly any abuse you can throw at it. I'm not sure what kind of treatment you should apply to the wood, though.

Get one of those kits from home depot or lowes where they supply the braces and joints then you just slip in the wood (that didn't sound right 😱)

I've always wanted to coat the wood top of my workbenches with that thick grey garage floor coating paint, but I don't know how practical that is.

Awsome, Thanks for sharing.

Would lacquer or shellac work as a coating? I've not used either of them. I just know they're usualy tough and transparent.

Im not sure if it can hold up to some of the cleaning chemicals ill be using on it.

Here's a thought my old boss and I discussed from time to time...

Spray on bedliner... It wouldn't maintain the wood finish...but would be durable. 🙂

We had a whole slew of uses for spray on bedliner... lol

Or how about a "plexiglass" cover for over the wood?

You'd still be able to see the wood finish, but could replace it if needed.

LOL!, doesnt give you a smooth working surface or this would be a golden idea!

I edited it a suggestion of a plexiglass "top" while you were responding to my spray on bedliner suggestion. 🙂

Plexi would not work good, Im gonna be working on firearms with metal parts it would get scratched up on the first day.

A solid core door makes a decent top - you can find them cheap at used building material lots. Build a 2x4 frame under it, 4x4 legs.

lol...funny you should mention that... we built a couple of picnic tables using plain (flat as in no panels) steel doors we found in the trash.

They work great.

I built this one:

Very solid.

I built one very similar to the one you linked, but no drawer and instead of a plywood top, I used 3 2x12's and topped it with a 1/4" piece of hardboard. I didn't have any plans, but my grandpa built the same one and helped my dad build his and so when I bought my house, my grandpa and dad came over and helped me build it.
