This is tough... its for a college friend of mine on a budget. she wants to build her first computer, i suggested sff and she loves the idea. requirements:
17" lcd
tv tuner
wireless keyboard/mouse
graphics performance not an issue
1gb ram

any suggestions?
here's what i have so far:

Shuttle XPC barebones system, socket 754 $259.00
Samsung 12xDVD writer $54.99
WD 80gb hard drive $58.00
Logitech Cordless desktop (kb/mouse) $34.99
Corsair Value 512MBx2 3200 $155.00
LG L1710S 17" lcd $279.00
AMD Athlon 64 2800+ $127.00
Kworld PCI tv tuner card $29.00
---------------------------------------------------------------
TOTAL: $996.98

it'd be awesome to get more hard drive space. any ideas?
heres the newegg list

I would spring for better RAM... 1GB dual channel CAS2.5 @ $169 shipped.
I wouldn't say that IF Corsair used Micron chips on their "ValueSelect" DIMMs.

BTW, WD drives are not known for being all that quiet.

THIS keyboard & mouse would make this system over the top!

hehe i know that all too well...i have 2x80s in my case for the OS....seagates and maxtors for the storage. Can't really hear them over 11 fans in my case so who cares :)

If you can handle rebates, then check Outpost.com for some of their Seagate deals. They have been selling 120 - 200gb drives for about $50 after a $50 rebate for quite a while now.

i'm aiming for simplicity on her first build. and she's really on a very tight budget, and uncomfortable with the idea of rebates. If i order it all from newegg, it'll come in one box, ready to go.

Now...a 200gb drive for 50 looks pretty good for me...i would if i had somewhere to hook it up. 1160gigs is using all my sata/ide channels :(

The shuttle xpc case should come with its own special heat sink, so you can ditch the retail version of your processor and go OEM instead.

Other than that, it looks fairly good. More hard drive space does sound like a good idea, but that depends a lot on how it'll be used. If your friend isn't going to be downloading lots of stuff off the internet or ripping DVDs to disk, 80 gigs is probably fine. If she is, well, its just more of a hassle to burn CDs/DvDs of stuff once you start filling up the drive.

Don't forget to calculate the shipping on this, and based on my latest newegg purchase, it won't "all come in one box", it'll come in at least two boxes, since my shuttle SFF case was shipped sepratly.
