Need to build a comp

So a friend of mine wants a Computer for a maximum of $1,500 now all I need to know is Amd or Intel??

The Core 2 I heard has some heat problems?

Amd I am More familiar with and will go for AM2 because they keep the comp in a enclosed area and Amd generates less heat

What should I use?

AFAIK, the C2D has no heat problems that you speak of. Also, the C2D provides the best bang for your buck as it is significantly faster (and just as cheap) than the current offerings of AM2 processors.

Intels typically produced more heat bcoz of their higher clock speed but C2D is based on a different architecture and now has clock speeds almost same as AMDs so the temps have also gone down and are now similar to AMDs - provided you dont overclock the ever living s*** out of it...

INTEL FTW

i was in your case a couple weeks ago. i had built nothing but AMD systems. But, after building my first intel/C2D system, i will say that it was just as easy and the speed is amazing

All the advice here is solid. There are no heat problems with the C2D, even with a huge overclock they still run cooler than Intel's of the past.

Also, as has already been stated, the price/performance ratio is massively in Intel's favor at the moment.

Upgradability is another your friend may want to consider. Right now he can get a mobo compatible with quad-core, outfit it with a C2D and then upgrade to quad-core in the future, when it is more affordable. With AMD, as far as quad-core goes, I think that everything is up in the air right now. (Quad-FX should not even be an option, by the way)

Intel's C2D heat problems? FUD! Have you been talking to OcHungry lately?

I've had nothing but AMD systems before I built this PC and I must say the ease of which it was all put together, set up and overclocked has absolutely amazed me, and meanwhile the performance is nothing short of astounding. For the best bang/buck at a mid-range budget it's definitely got to be Core 2 Duo. Don't be put off just by the different platform. We live and learn 😉.

Edit: Hell, for $1500 you could get some really really choice parts. That's a little over what all of mine cost.
