I'm looking into using my old case/PSU as an external drive enclosure for a USB dvd player, as well as 3 SATA drives (via Icy Dock).
The problem is that I want to use a regular, quiet ATX style PSU, instead of the noisy PSU's in DVD duplicators and other external cases.
My question is: Is there a known way to either A) turn on the ATX PSU without routing it through the motherboard and be able to turn it off via the case switch? or
B) is there a way to have an old cheap motherboard serve as the middle man to turn the PSU on, but not have the northbridge or CPU actually turn on and also avoid any beep codes, etc?
I've also considered using a Y cable from the computer's PSU and route it into the external enclosure's PSU, but this is a last resort. Thanks.
