I need to backup data to a 2nd hard drive today. However, my case is small and I have no where to mount it.

Is it safe to just set it on the bottom of my case for a few hours? Or is that dangerous?

yeah it's fine. did it for a couple of hours several times when moving drives and too lazy to mount it and move everything in the case. nothing bad happened.

It would be a good idea to put some kind of anti-ESD foam or padding under it to prevent ESD.

i've had them suspended in the air by the ribbon cable or the molex while piggy backing. no big deal
