intel 945 executive board

the box is full, but I need to add 1-2 TB of storage

I have a free PCIX x1 slot

amd 4 free sata ports on teh mobo

any one got some 2-4 port external enclosures they like?

JBOD is fine, as its to accomodate the new DLO stuff backup exec makes you do for clients

its going to tape so disk redundancy is not a huge issue

would prefer it suuports 1TB so I can toss in some WD RE3's

lots on newegg, but one of the best reviewed is OOS and I needz it nowish

I'm not that familiar with esata, or doing straight sata outside to teh external enclosure(is ther ea difference?) I know the chipset does NCQ but unsure it does the port multiplication stuff

i dont understand, if you only need 1-2TB and have 4 free sata ports why do you not just drop in a 2 TB drive and call it a day.

I don't think that using internal SATA connections externally is generally recommended. Not impossible or even hard to do but eSATA connectors are rated for more insertions and removals.

This is the one i have been looking to get

Good reviews and comes with a esata card
The esata card that comes with this is PCIe and I would make sure you have the slot for it (you said you had 1 PCI-X slot but the 945 board has PCIe and PCI slots so I'm guessing typo).

no room inside the box really

its got a scsi raid 5, tape drive, and cd drive.

there is technically room, but its warm enough as is, its an older antec tower chasis with 2 120mm fans and thats it....

the machine is warmer than I would prefer, and would rather not add to the problem :)

yeah they are not exactly interchangable :D

solmeister: that looks good, but at its price point I would get a drobo, I know I didnt list a budget, but I need to stay near where the link i posted was, under 200 USD unless the price includes disks.

Note, RAID 6 not mentioned. Do you really want to use RAID 5 with high capacity SATA drives?
